Someday, We Will Learn How to Release

(2023)

Spaces deeply shape our embodied experiences. We unconsciously adopt movement patterns that limit our bodies based on the contexts surrounding us. This project examines how notions of permissible movement differentiate bodies and shape interpersonal relationships. Specifically, it explores how and why whiteness restricts certain bodies in various contexts. It also investigates how teaching and knowledge that actively resist whiteness can empower individuals to liberate and expand their movement patterns. Using quotidian, dance studio, and party spaces as sites of movement research, this project envisions disrupting movement norms and expectations. What is the dance pedagogy that can achieve this?

This project was the recipient of the Alexander Twilight 1823 Diversity and Community Leadership Award and the Mahalingaiah Family Dance Prize, both awarded by Middlebury College.
